60" Umbrella

A 60"  satin umbrella with a black backing was used for this image. It  produces a soft light with indistinct shadow edges.  As with other umbrellas, light is scattered around the room resulting in lighter shadows and a lighter background tone.   If controlling stray light is not a big concern, large umbrellas can provide  an economical alternative to similarly-sized softboxes.   Umbrellas are somewhat limited by their protruding shaft, and as a result,  cannot be placed as close to a subject as a softbox.
